Alternatives in Chemical Pool Cleaning

Written by Bruce on July 6, 2010

Swimming pool necessitates certain treatment procedures for its maintenance and cleaning. These include the use of many types of chemicals that are useful in killing microorganisms that pose serious health threats. While there are many effective pool cleaning products available in your local supermarket that offer over 20% discount during promo sales, many of these products contain harmful chemicals.

Recommended levels of pool chemicals depending on the size and type of the swimming pool you own. But if you happen to use these chemicals in high amounts, coming in contact with such by skin or even breathing fumes, especially over time, can be damaging to your health. Important reasons to consider using nontoxic pool cleaning products include protecting your family from accidental poisoning and protect the quality of your swimming pool materials.

The basic chemicals in use in most pool cleaning systems today are chlorine and bromine. Chlorine is the chemical that is more traditionally used because it is widely available in the market. But many complaints are attached by its usage in pool treatments since it has a strong smell. Bromine is actually one of the pool cleaning chemicals that is chlorine based, but it works in a much more gentle way than chlorine.

With concern to such matter, a variety of alternatives to chlorine are being used to keep pools clean. Salt is probably the most common (although salt systems still use chlorine as the salt itself, in time, turns into chlorine but in much lesser concentrations). You can opt to go for water cleaning systems that use salt rather than chlorine systems. Saltwater pool evaporates more slowly than those treated with chlorine. A salt water system also reduces the amount of chemicals you use in pool maintenance. Another alternative for chemicals are plants. The plants can either be in the pool, out of the pool, or both, creating an environment close to nature. Plants can naturally filter and maintain your swimming pool at its best possible shape without the harmful after effects of toxic chemical cleaners while giving your pool a calming aura. In addition to what was mentioned, systems that use copper ionization and liquid oxidation to sanitize pool water, using no dangerous chemicals in the process also help in reducing health risks. Ionization-Oxidation Systems are hybrid water purification devices that supply a dual stream of sanitizing metallic ions to the pool water: usually copper and zinc. The copper ions function primarily as an algaecide and the zinc ions function as a bactericide.

Keeping your pool water clean requires not only filtering out dirt but also thorough killing off the bacteria, algae and other germs that can contaminate your swimming pool’s water. Hence, it is also important to remember that proper disposal of all toxic cleaners left after choosing to use non-toxic or organic ways is necessary. Improper disposal, such as pouring chemicals into the sink, outdoors, or trash cans can pollute the environment and threaten human health. Always read product labels for proper disposal instructions.
