Alternatives in Chemical Pool Cleaning

July 6th, 2010 by Bruce

Swimming pool necessitates certain treatment procedures for its maintenance and cleaning. These include the use of many types of chemicals that are useful in killing microorganisms that pose serious health threats. While there are many effective pool cleaning products available in your local supermarket that offer over 20% discount during promo sales, many of these products contain harmful chemicals.

Recommended levels of pool chemicals depending on the size and type of the swimming pool you own. But if you happen to use these chemicals in high amounts, coming in contact with such by skin or even breathing fumes, especially over time, can be damaging to your health. Important reasons to consider using nontoxic pool cleaning products include protecting your family from accidental poisoning and protect the quality of your swimming pool materials.

The basic chemicals in use in most pool cleaning systems today are chlorine and bromine. Chlorine is the chemical that is more traditionally used because it is widely available in the market. But many complaints are attached by its usage in pool treatments since it has a strong smell. Bromine is actually one of the pool cleaning chemicals that is chlorine based, but it works in a much more gentle way than chlorine.

With concern to such matter, a variety of alternatives to chlorine are being used to keep pools clean. Salt is probably the most common (although salt systems still use chlorine as the salt itself, in time, turns into chlorine but in much lesser concentrations). You can opt to go for water cleaning systems that use salt rather than chlorine systems. Saltwater pool evaporates more slowly than those treated with chlorine. A salt water system also reduces the amount of chemicals you use in pool maintenance. Another alternative for chemicals are plants. The plants can either be in the pool, out of the pool, or both, creating an environment close to nature. Plants can naturally filter and maintain your swimming pool at its best possible shape without the harmful after effects of toxic chemical cleaners while giving your pool a calming aura. In addition to what was mentioned, systems that use copper ionization and liquid oxidation to sanitize pool water, using no dangerous chemicals in the process also help in reducing health risks. Ionization-Oxidation Systems are hybrid water purification devices that supply a dual stream of sanitizing metallic ions to the pool water: usually copper and zinc. The copper ions function primarily as an algaecide and the zinc ions function as a bactericide.

Keeping your pool water clean requires not only filtering out dirt but also thorough killing off the bacteria, algae and other germs that can contaminate your swimming pool’s water. Hence, it is also important to remember that proper disposal of all toxic cleaners left after choosing to use non-toxic or organic ways is necessary. Improper disposal, such as pouring chemicals into the sink, outdoors, or trash cans can pollute the environment and threaten human health. Always read product labels for proper disposal instructions.

Why Use a Metal Roofing System

May 20th, 2010 by Bruce

Red Metal RoofRoofs nowadays no longer function as mere covering from rain, snow, or sunlight. Joining with the evolution of man’s creativity and resourcefulness, a latest roofing technology was developed in order to give your roof a new life and function, and a sense of innovation.

The Metal Roof is a system which uses metallic materials or tiles as a roof. It is said that the first metal roofs used by a civilization date back to 970 BC when temples in the Holy Land Jerusalem were dressed out with copper as roofs. Soon it became popular to other places, particularly the America during the 19th Century. Before, leads and coppers were the usual materials to be used for roofing until Robert Morris introduced Sheet Iron in America. Today, several improvements were made in order to enhance the features of this type of roof.

Metal roofs offer more benefits than the normal roofing materials. One of the most notable features of this roof system is its capability to endure way longer than other roofs. A metal roof is so durable that it can last from 50 to 100+ years, with a warranty of 20-30 years, which is twice the length of an asphalt roof. These roofs are sometimes coated with a zinc and aluminum alloy, making it more resilient to rusting and decay.

While other roofs can imperil your house by being so fire-prone, metal roofs are proven to salvage your home in case a flying burning ember threatens your safety. Aside from being fire-proof, this type of roof is hail and wind resistant. Dissimilar to other roof systems which are easily wrecked by piercing hails and can be carried by tough winds, metal roofs guarantee your security during times of catastrophe as such.

And don’t think that this roofing system would compromise your house’s stylish appearance. In fact, metal roofs are very fashionable and modern-looking. There are lots of metal roofing colors and designs to choose from. And it is not a ‘senseless style’; it is rather a style with function. White colored-metal roofs are said to decrease your energy consumption because they reflect back a portion of sun’s rays, lessening your air-condition and other cooler usage. Also, paints coated with Kynar can enhance the roof’s durability.

Although this metal roof system can be very expensive, the great thing is, if you look at it on a larger scale, you would notice that actually it isn’t so. Installation is the only expensive phase of it, but you need not to maintain it or replace it after every two years unlike other types of roof. Metal roofs have a longer life and do not consume your fortune from time to time.

How to Clean Brick Fireplaces

May 19th, 2010 by Bruce

Every time there is fire there would always be smoke and soot. So naturally a fireplace if used will always have the black imprints of something that was burned. And the problem is these stains are usually really difficult to clean. If you are not careful, improper ways of cleaning may result to discoloring the bricks of your fireplace and it will devastate its beauty. Here are some indoor fireplaces tips you can apply when cleaning so you can avoid brick discoloration.

Removing Smoke
Smoke is really hard to remove. Washing it off with plain water alone may not be enough to take away the stain even when using brushes with stiff bristles. It would be recommendable to use active cleaning agents, preferably imbued with bleach when brushing off this stubborn stain. The use of alkali detergents or any emulsifying agents would also help in taking them away; apply any of these cleaning agents to a brush with hard bristles or spray them on the surface for some time for it to effectively work on the stains. These chemical composed cleaning agents usually require some time to soften stains so that eventually it would be easier to remove it with a brush or any damp cloth. For stronger and more stubborn stains you may use trichloroethylene. This will take away the stain from the pores. However, be cautious in using trichloroethylene, ventilate the fumes when cleaning.

Dealing with Soot
When removing soot, children’ moulding clay does a good job. Press the moulding dough onto the brick to lift the soot off. Be very careful not to remove any surface material from the fireplace. Or you could use strong household vinegar, soak it into a brush, work it up by brushing a portion at a time. Slowly build your way up until every stained part is covered.

Bucket and Brush Method
Probably the most famous method of cleaning of them all in cleaning brick masonry, also the traditional way. It became popular as to widely used because of its simplicity and the presence of readily available cleaning compounds.

But before you get down to it, you must first discern the right cleaning solution to use.

  1. When using propriety compounds, make sure you chose the ones that are suitable for bricks and make certain to follow the product’s dilution manual. Too much may cause discoloration of the bricks or otherwise may not apply any effect at all in the cleaning process. There are particular commercial cleaning solution products in the market specialized for brick cleaning them up. You can look for them in your next shopping schedule.
  2. Detergent soaps can also be used to remove dirt, soil or mud stuck in between brick seams during construction.
  3. Acid solutions provide strong solution to stain problems as much as it gives the same amount of threat to your fireplace bricks. So be very careful when using acid for cleaning up the fireplace. It would be advisable to mix a 10 percent solution of HCL or muriatic acid, 9 parts plain water and 1 part HCL, and mix in a non-metallic container.

Always bear in mind though to not overdo cleaning, like excessive brushing in one portion or heavy pressing on the surface while using brushes with steel or hard bristles. This may destroy the paint finish in your bricks, even the new ones.

Cat Furniture for You and Your Pet

May 13th, 2010 by Bruce

Cats feel good if they can play around. They like to jump, stroll and play in smooth lawns to take some fresh air and to exercise. Unfortunately, you can’t always accompany your cat outside; you have other things to attend to. And you can’t always let your cat out; she might not return. So the best option for you is to provide indoor cat furniture where kitty can have fun and exercise without bothering you much.

There is a wide array of cat furniture sold nowadays. These products are cat scratching posts, cat beds, cat trees/condos, cat strollers among others. They provide different benefits to you and your cat.

Cat-scratching posts are extremely useful to both your cat and your home. If your cat loves to scratch your wallpaper, carpet, couch and your wooden chair, this is the solution. You can redirect your cat’s fondness to scratch your furniture by providing her a cat scratching post where she can sharp her claws and exercise as long as she wants to without destroying your stuff. With this furniture, you don’t need to declaw your kitty. Removing your cat’s claws could be the worst thing that you can do to her. And whatever happens, declawing should never be an option.

Cat beds, on the other hand, are very helpful when your cat just loves to lay down anywhere she wants, especially on your favorite sofa, where she makes mess most of the time. Aside from this, they also give your cat safety since she does not need to sleep elsewhere. Some cat beds are heated, which will definitely provide them the warmth and comfort that cats simply adore! This is definitely much more than your couch can offer!

Cat trees and cat condos enable your cat to exercise and to stretch out her limbs. This furniture has several branches or platforms where your pet can jump and transfer from one place to another. Regular exercising on cat trees prevents obesity, also being a good alternative to your kitty’s ‘inherent’ climbing needs. As you may have noticed, cats usually climb tall trees and afterwards are afraid to come down. With an indoor cat tree, you can be sure that your kitty is both content and safe.

Cat strollers, as the name suggests, are for owners who want to bring their cats outside without bothering to carry them around. Special strollers are developed with different designs. You can pick the model that suits best your needs and your taste.

These are only some examples of the cat furniture that you can buy. You can also make such products on your own. You can check online and look for Do-It-Yourself procedures to construct cat furniture. You won’t spend too much, and you will still give your cat the comfort she needs. If your cat is properly groomed and satisfied, it’s most likely that you’ll also feel bright and in the mood to do productive things.

Make Your Room Stylish Using Curtains

May 10th, 2010 by Bruce

Do you want to change the look of your room without spending a lot? Use curtains.

Of course your wallpaper, furniture, lights and wall paint can definitely transform your interior decor. But curtain design is something that you can do without much effort. You don’t need to spend a lot on curtains unlike other house accessories. What you just need is your natural sense of style. Because the truth of the matter is, the quickest and the most affordable way to change the mood and appearance of your house is through a little manipulation of curtains. And as easy as a short hocus-pocus you’ll feel the ambience of the room that you’ve always longed for.

Your curtain needs not be exaggerated or too flaunty, otherwise, it will be the center of attraction in your room. Although, indeed, curtains can sometimes be really elegant and embellished, they are not supposed to be the cream of the crop. You should know that curtains are an accessory (an important house accessory, though), and their function is to lighten up (or sometimes darken up) your room according to the mood you want. So you see, your room is the one that is valuable here.

If you plan to divert the attention in your room from the window towards a specific spot, say your favorite furniture or painting, it is suggested that you use a curtain with simple style and natural colors. A little manipulation on the way you tie your drapes would really be useful.

On the other hand, if your house is situated in a place with quite good scenery, you could opt to use the curtain to actually direct your visitors to the view outside without losing the spotlight on your own room. A more vibrant color or a more stylish drape will complement the view and your room well.

Colors are very important in choosing the best curtain. It is best that you select shades that are mixable with the colors present inside you room; your curtain has to blend with them. You also have to take into consideration the purpose of getting a curtain. Warm colors like red, yellow, and pink are sure to give your room a little zest. While cool colors like gray, white or blue are conducive for bedrooms. And lastly, you should choose the color that you like the most and that fits your mood well in order to feel comfortable with your room’s total aura.

As soon as you decided on what color to choose, then you can proceed to the next consideration, that is, length. There are different curtain lengths that you can choose from. One is the formal floor length, the one that perfectly reaches your floor; to-the-sill, which perfectly reaches your window sill; to-the-bottom-of-the-window-trim, which extends shortly below your sill; and the puddles-on-the-floor, which uses over-length drapes that create a romantic wave on the floor. Of course, these lengths have different uses: the formal are for living rooms and decorous areas (an office, for instance); both the second and the third kinds are perfect for a kitchen or bathroom window; and the last kind, obviously, are used to stir a romantic atmosphere.

You can also consider the extent to which the curtain will control the light coming in and coming out of your room. Laces produce a nice effect to soften the light entering your window. If you intend to darken your room, use a thicker fabric. Lined or insulated curtains are also best to avoid unwanted people from sneaking an eye on you.

But if your curtain is not really for your window, you might want to use string curtains. This type of drapes is usually used as a space separator or just for aesthetics. String curtains give the room a good sense of chic and elegance.

And finally, make sure that while designing your room with curtains, you do enjoy the whole process. Your happy mood will definitely reflect on the style that you will establish. And aside from that, the feeling of satisfaction that you’ll have at the end of each procedure will always make you feel more comfortable with what you came up with. And that’s what matters most.

The Cat Flap and the Feline Nature

May 7th, 2010 by Bruce

As a cat owner and a chronic ‘cat enthusiast’, I often browse many cat forums and cat sites. I’ve recently came across a debate that gave me the idea for this post. The theme was ‘Indoor cats vs outdoor cats’. People were proving that since it’s so dangerous for our kitties to go outside, they should stay inside all the time. One person even said, I quote – “Cats belong indoors”.

Allow me to disagree. Cats are felines – probably the most beautiful, strong and dignified animals. Stating that they ‘belong indoors’ you are denying them their true nature, their right to freedom and independence.

Humans domesticated the wild cats many centuries ago, but this doesn’t mean that cats became soft cuddly toys without instincts, needs and rights. Any living creature deserves to see the sun and breathe fresh air every day. How would you feel if somebody told you that you belong indoors because it’s dangerous to be outside? You could get attacked, kidnapped, robbed or hit by a car! Does this ring a bell to you? Isn’t it the same thing that many people say about their cats?

It’s impossible to protect someone, even your own child, from all the dangers of this wild world. But this doesn’t mean that we should isolate ourselves and live in seclusion. The same cat be said about our pets, especially about cats.

If you live at the countryside or in the suburbs, it’s mandatory that you install a petsafe cat flap on your back door – it will allow your cat to go outside whenever he/she needs, at the same time protecting your home. How is that possible? Very simple – the petsafe cat flap has a special locking system – magnetic, microchip activated or infrared. The door will open only when receiving a special signal emitted by a transmitter that you can plant on your cat’s collar. As easy as that!

This kind of cat flap will protect not only the security of your house, but also your adventurous kitty. Whenever she’s being chased by a dog or another animal, she can hide inside the house, being sure that the unwanted guest will not be able to come after her through the flap.

If you live in the center of a big city or in a dangerous neighborhood, the situation changes a little. Don’t allow your kitty to go outside alone – instead, take her with you to the park and allow her to sunbath and play in the grass under your supervision. However, when you’re at work or too busy to do that, your kitty still deserves some fresh air!

The compromise is to install a cat flap on your balcony door – this way, your cat will be able to go to the balcony whenever she chooses, enjoy the view, watch the birds and sunbath. But don’t forget to install a cat net – sometimes, cats tend to be too ‘enthusiastic’ about the birds they’re ‘watching’ and might fall from an unprotected balcony. The cat net will catch and protect even the bravest SuperCat, at the same time allowing the sunrays to pass through.

You have to accept the fact that you can’t protect your pet all the time. This doesn’t mean that your furry friend doesn’t have the right to live a fulfilled feline life – running in the tall grass, climbing trees, chasing butterflies, socializing, hunting and exploring. If your cat will see that you respect her independence, she will trust and love you much more than before.

What Ya Need? To Control Rats…

December 25th, 2009 by Bruce

To control rats, you need to know what kind of methods really work and to be aware of them. To exterminat rats you have to get some really good tools (either traps or poison) that will give you a hand in doing that. However, don’t even try to think about what kind of things you are going to need in order to control rats especially before Christman. This period of time you have to be aware of some things that you really care about. It doesn’t really worth it when you are at the beginning. Think about your family during the holidays and forget about rats.

Rats are going to be your next big problem after the holidays. Now it’s time to party and have fun, even if your house is in big trouble. Do you really think that you are going to be able to do a rat pest control management in the New Year’s Eve? Come on… let’s be serious.. Something like this won’t happen pretty soon. Instead of being with your family and being happy you are going to start seeking where to find those cracks that rats used to get in your house and fill them with poison or even try to install rat traps. It won’t happen anytime soon!

Now, even controlling some sort of pest and let it be rats (today) this still isn’t an excuse not to celebrate Christmas because of them. Stop worrying too much and start paying attention to things which are really improvement. If you are following our advice and doing things as you have to do you are going to be fine and you’ll solve your problems sooner or later. It is just a matter of time and of accumulating the right level of experience and skills. So thanks for taking the time and visiting my blog, thanks for reading this post!

Merry Christmas!

Does Electronic Rat Control Work?

December 22nd, 2009 by Bruce

Many would like to discover if electronic rat control works! Of course it does and it works better than ever! I would like to introduce you folks to the electronic zapper, one of the most efficient rat traps I have used in the last couple of months while helping my parents with their rat infestation problem.

You have to know that they live outside of the city and the number of rats in those places is pretty high. They’ve unsuccessfully tried poison and just got themselves with that unpleasant smell and many other methods that just create the impression that only help some smarter rats to accommodate and nothing else. When we are here to discuss does electronic rat control work or not we are eager to prove that it does and to suggest all the people around to try it first before complaining that it is totally mess and that it doesn’t work at all. From my personal experience I can say that if you are using it wisely and you are able to read the instructions you won’t ever fail.

No one fails and it is pretty serious that everyone in here is going to question my affirmations, but I just don’t care. It worked with my type of big black rats and I’m sure that it is going to work with your type of rats.

After all, there is nothing to lose. If this method won’t manage to fix your rat pack invasion than the only thing you have left is to call professionals that might solve your problem once and for all. Don’t do it just for the sake of saying that it doesn’t work and is not effective. Invest some time and passion in it and manage to apply those zappers attentively and you will notice results pretty fast. Electronic rat control does work!

Who is a Pest Rat Exterminator?

December 21st, 2009 by Bruce

Rats are pest and people have been always looking to find solutions to get rid of them. While more than 90% of the population of USA for example doesn’t give two cents about the methods and techniques used to keep rats away, others claim that using violent methods like rat poison and snap traps is wrong and that we as human beings should constantly think about using more humane methods of rat control and that this is going to help us in the long run achieve a much better karma and overall state. While some of the things and aspects mentioned above are true, others aren’t and we are here to prove you guys that no matter how humane we might try to be, it isn’t going to be that easy especially when folks like you and me are getting closer and closer to the idea that using snap traps, zappers (electronic traps) and all the old school methods is probably the safest yet the best and most effective method of rat control.

Yes, I agree, it is pretty violent, but doesn’t it look violent when these poor little beings bring unwanted diseases in your house, when they destroy and eat your crops, when they come to your house and start to devastate it without any bit of mercy? Well, I guess that is going to hurt a lot and you should realize that this is a type of war and never ending conflict that is going on here.

If you don’t get them, they’ll get you and there is nothing else that you can do about it. I had the chance to talk to some of my good friends from the Southern USA and they say that there are period of the year when rats are much more active, but unfortunately there is nothing one can do expect calling a pest rat exterminator. Move on!

Special Traps for Rats

December 20th, 2009 by Bruce

Special traps for catching and killing rats can be considered the electronic or electric ones. Those are also famous as zappers because they literally zap the poor being and make it instantly die. Well, it might sound cruel and it is quite a violent death, but what other options do farmers have when their herd of horses is being invaded by rats who are constantly attacking to get food and everything else they need. You should know that rats are also extremely violent, especially when they are hungry. We are humans and we have to act.

I understand that when you do it differently you are going to need maybe some more humane methods and resources, but what do you want to do when you need to exterminate hundreds of hungry rats. Will you use humane methods or just go for plain zappers that smash those rats around and simply kill them.

Zappers or electronic rat traps are not that expensive nowadays and if I’m not mistaken there is a very well known company called “Victor” which produces special traps for rats of this kind. If you are into getting rid of rats fast and efficiently than you need to check this out! You are not going to be sorry, believe me!

Millions of people have successfully managed to get rid of rats and any rodents that are getting close to your house and not it is your turn to prove your creativity and to manage the wildlife problem in your own yard. You are in charge when using do it yourself methods and these special zappers are simply great for something like this. Just consult with a professional about the model you are going to need and you’ll finish those rats in a matter of minutes. Guaranteed!
